These are first approximately five minutes of two documentaries by Robert Gates. All Shaken Up was filmed in 1998 and helped lead to stronger controls on blasting in southern West Virginia.

Mucked was filmed in 2001-2003 after devastating floods, partially caused by valley fills and logging, hit the coalfields. In 2003, the legislature passed laws requiring mines to prevent any additional runoff on mines and requiring valley fills be built in more stable and flood-proof ways. There have not been any serious flooding from mountaintop removal mines since the regulations went in effect in mid-2004.
